In 2024, I accidentally walked 11 miles from Eastbourne to Seven Sisters on my own. And I loved it.
It’s so freeing – just pick a direction and walk. No stopping for other people, no feeling guilty when you stray to take cool mushroom photos or just stop and listen to the birds. You don’t have to fill silence or be distracted by the things you’re talking about. You’re just present. It’s a great head-clearer.
Thus, ‘have more solo adventures’ became a 2025 resolution.
The problem? I don’t drive.
I wanted to chase that high, but in more wild and natural places than a local park. But wild places by their nature (heh) don’t have good transport infrastructure, and it’s difficult to plan walks you can only access by public transport because despite what you search, Google just presents you with walks in Nottingham, not walks you can get to from Nottingham. So I thought it might be useful if I created a list as I explore, and hopefully save you some of that same painful admin!
Whether you choose to walk alone or with pals, take a look at some of the places you can easily visit by train or bus below.
Walking trails leaving from Nottingham
I’m based in Hucknall, but I’ll disregard the time and money it takes for me to get to the city from this list. Each of these trips starts from Nottingham city centre or the train station, so remember to take into account the extra time it takes you to get there. (If travelling by train, I’d also recommend buying your train tickets at least a day in advance to get better fares!)
This is a living list, not an exhaustive one, so remember to check back here from time to time, or subscribe at the bottom of the page and get notified whenever I publish a new walk (I’m aiming to do one new walk each month).

I’d also recommend downloading the following free apps that I would be totally lost without (in some cases literally):
