On the precipice of another year
looking down upon the last
as it recedes to memory
I realise the rhythm of events
mirrors our rotations like the lunar cycle –
friends arrive and retreat like the tide
life and death flood in swift succession.
Some years leave us renewed
while the currents of others drag away
irretrievable parts of you.
Yet we remain the same shoreline
shaped by the shifting water.
I am learning to move with the tides
to float, not fight the waves
for we cannot have flow without ebb
and are privileged to experience both
to adore the water so
that when it finally returns to the shore
we are the more grateful for it.
